Nicolas Pynchon - Agnes Pynchon
Nicolas Pynchon (1498-1534 (?)) married Agnes Pynchon (born about 1500; she came from Writtle, Essex). They had four children. This Nicolas Pynchon, born and bred in Wales, became the London Sheriff around 1534. He died in Middlesex. The Pynchon family would live from now on in the south of England. Children:

William Pynchon — Elisabeth Stevens
After a first, and short marriage with Elisabeth Allen (of Allyn), William Pynchon married Elisabeth Stevens. Five children:

John Pynchon - Jane Empson
John Pynchon's second marriage was with Jane Empson (1542-November, 10th, 1587). She was a daughter of Sir Richard Empson, a knight who had serious trouble with Henry VIII. Children:

John Pynchon's second marriage, with Frances Brett (?-?) proved to be very fertile: 8 children, all of one do not interest us:

William Pynchon - Anna Andrew(s)
William Pynchon married Anna Andrew(s) (1580-1630/31). They had four children, all born in England. William's wife would die of the scurvy in Dorchester when just arrived. He would marry a second time. Willam crossed the Atlantic. Elsewhere on this site, there is some more information on William's life, and his theological disputes with Boston.

  1. Mary (1622 - October 26th, 1657). She married Eleazur Holyoke in 1640 and was the mother of eight children.

  3. John (1626 - January, 17th 1702/3), the most powerful Pynchon ever
  4. Anne (1630 - 1681/1682, Wraysbury, Buckinghamshire, England). William Pynchon would spend his last years in her company.

John Pynchon (I) — Amy Wyllys
John Pynchon I married Ammy Wyllys (1621-1699). The Pynchon family is at its height now -see this short article (Dutch). The couple had four children; all Pynchons in the US are descendants from them.

  1. Joseph (July 26th, 1646, Springfield - December, 30th, 1682, Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts). He went to Harvard and graduated in 1664. He became a physician and died umarried, while a representative at the General Court.
  2. John (II) (October, 15th, 1647- April, 25th, 1721)
  3. Mary (October 28th 1650, Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut -1675/1676, Springfield,,Connecticut)
  4. William (October 11th, 1653, Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut - June 15th, 1654)

John Pynchon (II) — Margaret Hubbard
Marriage with Margaret Hubbard (1647-11 Nov 1716). 3 children:

  1. John III (1674-12 July 1742). He married Batshua Taylor and they he had 6 kids; none of these are of any interest to us:
    -Elizabeth (27 Dec 1702-26 Sep 1776)
    -Col William (11 Nov 1703 - 26 Sep 1776)
    -John IV (7 Feb 1705 - 6 Apr 1754)
    -Joseph (7 Feb 1705 - 1765). He graduated from Harvard in 1726 and was a librarian.

    -Bathshua was (11 Jan 1708 - 5 Jan 1760)

  2. Margaret (1680-?). She married on August, 10th, 1704 with Nathaniel Downing. No descendants

William Pynchon - Catherine Brewer
William married on May, 15th, 1721 a certain Catherine Brewer (October 25th, 1700 - April 10th, 1747), who died suddenly, "struck by lightning"). William was a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Springfield. Six children:

  1. Sarah Pynchon (August, 14th, 1721-August, 4th, 1755) She married 'Colonel' Josiah Dwight (October, 23d, 1715 - ?. No children.
  2. William Pynchon (December 11th (17th?), 1723 - January 11, 1788) who married Catharine Cabot Sewell. He was a lawyer in Salem. Kids:

  3. Margaret Pynchon (November, 24th, 1727, April 1772). who married in 1750 a 'Major' Elijah Williams of Deerfield, Massachusetts (1712 -1772).
  4. Daniel John Pynchon (October, 7th, 1733 - April, 22nd, 1754) who died suddenly when a student at Yale.
  5. Joseph Pynchon (October, 30, 1737 - November, 25th, 1794) who married Sarah Ruggles, the daughter of reverend Thomas Ruggles, Guilford, Connecticut. He was a merchant at Guilford and later at New York. He was a tory.
  6. Charles Pynchon (? - August, 19th, 1783), who was a physician.

Joseph Pynchon - Sarah Ruggles
Joseph Pynchon studied in Yale and went also into politics. It's nearly a family habit: he chose the wrong side during the Revolution. He and Sarah Ruggles had three children:

  1. Polly Pynchon, who died at the age of 10, November 1777
  2. William, who died as a 5 month baby, on August, 22nd, 1773, and
  3. Thomas Ruggles Pynchon I (1760-1796), the first of that name, was educated as a physician and surgeon like his uncle Charles, and held practice in New York, eventually Philadelphia. He was one of the early members of the New Haven County Medical Society and the Connecticut Medical Society. At the moment of his sudden death in 1796, he was a Fellow of the Connecticut Medical Society.
